It's Tuber Time!

Again in 2026 I have many extra tubers to give away beginning late March.

Dahlia Basics

Dahlias love lots of sunshine (at least 6-8 hours/day of full sun) and produce non-stop blooms late summer until frost. Dahlias come in many sizes, shapes, heights, and colors. They are truly an amazing flower.

Dahlia Growing Talk

In February 2026 I am giving a presentation about dahlias at the Brainerd Garden Club. You can download my Powerpoint slides here:

My Tubers

Most of my dahlia tubers were purchased from small flower growers, since tubers from overseas tend to have more disease issues. When I dig up my dahlia tubers in the fall, I am careful to only keep tubers from plants that are very healthy. If I have any doubts, I toss the plant. I cannot guarantee my tubers will produce perfect plants. Several tubers I purchased from excellent flower farmers have not thrived. This is common and expected that a small percent will not do well for any number of reasons.

In the spring, I give away my extra tubers. I will post information here and send an email to those on my email list.

Fall Dahlia Care

Dahlias cannot be left in the ground in most of the U.S. as the tubers will rot if exposed to freezing weather. You may either treat them as an annual and dig out the entire plant and throw it away, or you can dig up the dahlia tubers and store them over the winter.

I have an updated pdf on Dahlia Fall Digging & Storing available with the link below.
